Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Gilbert, AZ

New Construction

The new hospital in Gilbert wanted to create a chapel space where employees as well as visitors could come and find peace, a resting place and a sense of the sacred. The chapel is located just off the lobby. The committee wanted visitors to know its location so a stained glass window separates the chapel from the lobby. They wanted artwork to relate to nature. A carved wooden screen depicting the Tree of Life is a main focal point of the space.

In addition to the chapel, I was also responsible for other artwork around the hospital. An icon of Catherine McAuley, the Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, the sponsors of the hospital, is located on the history wall outside the chapel. A bas relief piece depicting the Archangel Raphael protecting a doctor examining a patient is located just inside the employees’ entrance. A life sized bronze statue of Catherine McAuley is in front of the hospital. The committee wanted her to be greeting and welcoming all who come to the hospital.
